This course introduces several important “isms”, that is to say arguments about the nature of society, the state, and social transformation. You will be introduced to: Conservatism, Liberalism, Socialism, Anarchism, Bolshevism, Neo-Liberalism, and Feminism. The course aims to develop students’ “political literacy” defined as an understanding of the fundamental assumptions and arguments from which competing political perspectives (that is, “isms”) derive.
Our class time will be divided into two parts. On Tuesdays you will view a lecture video which will be available on the course website using “Kaltura”, a video capture technology. On Thursdays we will have a discussion (via Zoom) based on the reading from 12:30 to 2:00pm. Assessment is based on two in-class exams, the final and class participation.
Assessment:
Class participation: 10%
Exams: 2*25%=50%
Final: 40%
Course Materials: All course materials will be available on the course website as PDF Files.
