As stated in our lesson this week, “Political socialization begins when you are young and continues throughout your life through agents of socialization.” One of my earliest memories regarding politics was when I was 12 years old during Barack Obama’s first presidential election in 2008. I recall the election being a major topic of discussion in classes and at home. I believe we even watched one of his speeches during history class and I remember feeling how much of a significant and important moment it was. History class at this age is also where I first began to learn about the steps of the electoral process, political parties, and government roles and involvement. Most of my political socialization at that age came from my parents and family members. “The majority of the political socialization literature proposes that through either active or passive teaching, children “learn” their political party identification from their parents, and this identification, in turn, becomes part of their identity” (Ojeda & Hatemi, 2015) I recall my parents being excited for the election and as a Hispanic household my parents told me that we were voting for Obama as representation for minorities in America. At that age most of what you know and believe in life is passed down from your family, so I never questioned my family’s political standings.
