Your purpose: to summarize the important points of the controversy; briefly describe the significant events, organizations and people of the controversy; and provide your initial impressions and opinions about the controversy.
Audience: readers who may have heard of this controversy but are generally unfamiliar with its specifics
Remember that youre choosing a Congressional Quarterly Researcher from after July 1, 2016. Older CQRs will not be accepted. WARNING Be sure youve chosen one of the 24- or 28-page regular issues of the magazine; CQR sometimes also publishes brief updates, in its Hot Topics link, to topics it has already covered. Do not choose one of these brief updates.
Assignment: For this assignment, you are being asked to write a brief essay (500-word minimum) in which you include
A title that includes your CQR controversy and your approach (summary/response) –> CQRs (insert controvery here): A Summary and Response
An introductory paragraph that briefly explains what the controversy covered in the CQR is and includes the month, date and year of the CQR as well as its author and title;
A paragraph that briefly explains at least 3 issues/arguments within the larger controversy;
A paragraph that briefly explains 3 significant events or developments in the history of the controversy. These could be battles/wars, changes in laws/regulations, elections/changes in governments, natural disasters, discoveries/inventions, etc.;
A paragraph that gives at least 3 specific, named organizations (private or government) involved in the controversy and briefly explains their involvement in or position on the controversy;
A paragraph that gives 3 specific, named people involved in the controversy and their jobs/positions and how they are involved in the controversy (excluding the two individuals arguing the At Issue question);
A paragraph that gives the At Issue question, the names and backgrounds of the two individuals arguing the yes/no (pro/con) positions on the question, and if the two people wrote their arguments for CQR or if CQR exerpted them from some other source (Congressional testimony, speech, book, etc,);
A concluding paragraph that gives your impressions and opinions about the controversy based upon your reading.
