1.
Outline, outline, outline!
Take a look at your annotated bibliography and presentation. Remember that your presentation was designed to answer the main questions/address the key components of your research essay. You will basically be taking that presentation and using the annotated bibliography to fill in the blanks.
HINT: I typically prefer to work in themes: I find they key ideas/questions/themes that emerged in my annotated bibliography and decide which order I must address those topics in my body paragraphs.
Consider how you will create flow and logical order with(in) paragraphs. For example, you should define any scope, parameters, and concepts early in the paper so that the reader can focus on your discussion and not on guessing/hunting for information
Equally important to the idea of a paragraph’s development is the matter of the paragraph’s arrangement. Paragraphs are arranged differently for different purposes. For example, if you are writing a history paper and wish to summarize a sequence of events, you of course will arrange your information chronologically. If you are writing a paper for an art history course in which you want to describe a painting or a building, then you will perhaps choose to arrange your information spatially. If you are writing a paper for a sociology course in which you have been asked to observe the behaviors of shoppers at a supermarket, you might want to arrange your ideas by working from the specific to the general.
2.
Start the Rough Draft
Use your outline and annotated bibliography to guide you as you move through your first draft.
Remember that your goal is to find connections between your sources and be able to discuss those connections and their implications for your topic.
This will be your analysis/so what?/significance and should connect back to your larger thesis.
Your first body paragraph
may
wish to address/acknowledge the opposing and/or alternative viewpoints so that you get that out of the way and can avoid interrupting the flow of your discussion.
