The field of Human Services has the objective of meeting human needs through an “interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” (Sommer-Flanaga, 2015). The Human Services profession is one which promotes improved service delivery systems by addressing not only the quality of direct services, but also by seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, and coordination among professionals and agencies in service delivery. All human service workers perform many of the same basic tasks. They evaluate a client’s needs, create a treatment plan, and put the plan into action. Throughout the process, they provide clients with emotional support. “ When working with the client, human service workers identify problems and create a plan for services to help the client solve these problems. This process which includes evaluating the client’s support system, environment, and values. Human service professionals assist individuals, families and members of groups and communities in renew their capacity to function as individuals and in society”(Rusly, Yih-Tong Sun & Corner, 2014). Working with individuals or groups, human service professional’s work with individuals to understand and optimize their capabilities, ability to cope and problem solving skills to maximize their effectiveness. By helping the individual or organization implement structural changes through interventions and services the human services professional creates an environment where optimal results are most likely to occur.

A very prevalent issue that human services professionals may encounter would be child abuse. Not only is the professional responsible for addressing the unsafe behaviors that got the attention of children’s services, but the worker needs to recognize risk factors that the parents may have. Despite the fact that a caseworker’s primary goal is to allow the children to remain in the home, there still ends up being thousands of children removed each year. Removal comes with its own notion of trauma; however, with the inclusion of social services and effective mental health services, the accumulation of risks becomes reduced as the youth transition into adulthood (Hamilton et al, 2012).
The text finds that the Human Services Delivery Model is a “systematic way of thinking about complex situations” (McClam et al, 2015). It is important to mention that this model can be changed throughout the treatment process to accurately denote where the client is in their treatment program. For example, many families who enter into the child protection system, their basic needs as described in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are not being met. To be able to effectively address the issues which opened the case, the professionals must ensure those basic needs are met. For many families, this means referring them to social care and social control programs, organizations, and agencies. Often times workers would have to refer their clients to food banks, or agencies that help them find housing. Sometimes families look for organizations to help them pay bills they are behind on. Once these basic needs are met, the family can focus on the deep rooter issues which got them involved with children’s services.
