In a 900-1500 word compare and contrast essay, analyze audience and purpose in two of the optional texts. In what significant ways are audience and purpose in these two texts similar? In what ways do they differ? Of the two texts, which one is the most relevant to you and why?

This assignment asks you to identify:

both authors’ intended audience
both authors’ purpose for writing
how you relate to the texts
There is no one right answer for these. Given your understanding of each text, how do you identify audience and purpose in each? You get to decide how much to focus on audience and purpose. Some of you will make it the primary focus of your essay. Others will focus primarily on the relevance of one of the texts to your life. However you focus your essay, you just need to include analysis of audience and purpose somewhere in the paper.

Thesis statement: Decide how you will focus your essay—what you want your claim to be (the overall point you will argue in your essay). You have options. Your thesis may be your claim about the strongest connection you see between the two essays or your thesis may be your claim about the connection you have to the text that is most relevant to you. Be specific. When you step back from your essay, what is the one big point you want to leave your readers with?

To determine audience and purpose, consider the overall aspects of each text:

title
introduction
thesis statement (essay’s overall claim)
focus (topic sentences)
support
commentary/analysis
organization
conclusion
Include analysis of anything else you like—personal experience, relevant observation, your direct or indirect knowledge of the world, etc.— to develop your essay. Just as the authors we’ve read do, include specifics to support your claims.

Required:

A clear thesis statement—one that conveys your interpretive claim about the subject

Analysis of at least two of the optional works
Quotations from the reading(s) in MLA format: Introduce the quote with a signal phrase:
Staples states, “———-.” or According to the text, “————” (Staples).
A works cited entry in MLA format for each source you cite (required to earn a passing grade): List of Works Cited Entries.
Pick two of the optional works:

Brent Staples’ “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space”
Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “The Danger of a Single Story”
Nancy Mairs’ “On Being a Cripple” “On Being a Cripple”
Lars Eighner’s “On Dumpster Diving”
Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Serving in Florida”
Note: The first time you identify the author, list first and last name. Thereafter, list only the author’s last name.
