Hello Professor Zody and class,

In order for an Advanced Practice Nurse to work and remain in good standing in the state of Florida it is necessary for them to visit the state of Florida Board of Nursing website. On the website you can research the Nurse Practice Act and APN scope of practice guidelines. The Florida Board of Nursing provides details and instructions about what you are required to do to get your license in Florida, the initial application, additional fees to be granted a license, and what you need to do each year to maintain your license. Especially important to keep in mind, you will be advised as to what authority you will have to practice in Florida.

To meet the educational requirements to be an APN in Florida, one must successful complete a graduate degree program in Nursing from an accredited school such as Chamberlain University. Graduate courses such as advanced pathophysiology, advanced physical assessment, and advanced pharmacology are mentioned as educational requirements. In addition to the graduate courses, 500 hours of clinical hours are required in the State of Florida.

License Requirements is summarized on the Florida Board of Nursing website in the Licensing section. There are 4 requirements (1) You must have a valid Registered Nurse License, (2) The Educational Requirements (3) submission of proof of APRN certification, and (4) malpractice insurance. To obtain the APRN license, one must also provide electronic fingerprinting as well as health, criminal, and a disciplinary history. The application and licensure fee is $100. The dispensing license fee is $100. Per the Florida Board of Nursing website, in order to maintain the APN license, one must complete the renewal application, provide proof of continuing education requirements, fees due, information about current practice setting, an updated practitioner profile and completion of the financial responsibility form.

Per the state of Florida Statute 464.012 NPs have limited practice with regards to supervision and narcotics. The NP must be working under a medical physician and are limited with respects to prescribing narcotics. Otherwise, the NP scope of practice in Florida includes assessing patients, creating care plans, prescribing medications within their scope of practice, ordering diagnostic tests, providing referrals for physical and occupational therapy services and managing patients with stable chronic conditions. You need to maintain your license in accordance with the Florida Board of Nursing to maintain your prescriptive authority. You do not need a separate license/certificate to be allowed to prescribe or keep your prescriptive authority in Florida.

Due to a high number of NPs in Florida, there has not been a great impact on patient care. Rosa et al. (2020) stated that “…health systems must deliberately encourage policies that expand practice independence for NPs to fill a dire gap in care delivery, especially in low-resource countries, rural settings, and for poor and/or marginalized populations” (p. 556). Many hospital in Florida hire APNs to care for patients in their emergency departments. The hospitals that hire NPs also have urgent care centers and primary care clinics affiliated with them that are prime sites for APNs to work. Patients are receptive to the care provided by NPs. Rosa et al. (2020) mention how “nurse practitioners have the potential to be definitive change agents for the profession at the intersection of practice, policy and leadership” (p. 558). Research shows that the care NPs provide improve quality measures in rural and urban settings, NPs spend more time with patients, have a high number of follow-up visits, and overall high patient satisfaction rates.
