Discussion on the Family
Brittany Hutchinson
Looking at my family history, it’s evident that each generation has had its own unique experiences that reflect broader societal changes. My hardworking grandparents, who were able to own a house and retire in their 60s, represent a time when stable employment, particularly in the military, provided economic security and opportunities for property ownership. Their story reflects a generation that valued hard work and traditional paths to retirement.
On the other hand, my parents’ generation faced significant challenges with addiction. My mother was a single mom who relied on government assistance and had children as a teenager. This experience significantly impacted the trajectory of our family and reflects the difficulties faced by single parents, particularly in terms of economic stability and social support.
In turn, I also became a single mom as a teenager, following in the footsteps of my mother. This generational pattern of early parenthood and single motherhood has had a profound impact on our family’s experiences and dynamics, highlighting the challenges faced by young single parents and their children.
Moreover, my sister also became a single mom as a teenager, further underscoring the generational pattern of early parenthood and single motherhood in our family.
In contrast, my sister and I completed high school and made choices leading to our financial independence, showcasing a departure from the experiences of the previous generations. This shift underscores the transformative power of education and career opportunities in achieving upward mobility, despite the challenges we faced as young single parents.
Additionally, it’s notable that gender roles have remained relatively constant in my family, with both spouses working. This reflects a trend towards dual-income households that has become more common in contemporary society.
Furthermore, religion was never a significant factor in the lives of the last three generations of my family. This illustrates a departure from the more religiously-centered family structures that were prevalent in previous eras.
Additionally, my interracial marriage and the mixed ethnicity of my children reflect the increasing diversity and cultural integration in contemporary families. This highlights the changing societal norms and values surrounding marriage and family, as well as the broader trend of cultural diversity in modern society.
Through this lens, it’s evident that my family’s experiences are intertwined with broader sociological trends, such as social mobility, education, gender roles, single parenthood, interracial marriage, and diversity. This shift from a pattern of delayed success to one of educational achievement and early career success is indicative of changing social and economic structures. Additionally, it underscores the evolving landscape of family structures and relationships, particularly in terms of racial and ethnic diversity. By examining my family’s history through a sociological lens, I gain insights into the interplay of our individual experiences with broader social forces and cultural shifts.
Family Discussion

My family consists of my mom, my brother, my sister, and I. My mom and I are first generation immigrants, while my siblings were born in the United States. I have a stepfather, but him and my mom are divorced. There are many differences from my family compared to my grandparents. The biggest one is my mom’s immigration to the United States. Besides us, we have a cousin that also came to the United States, but she is on my grandmother’s side, so we are not very close to them. Following that, my mom is religious but not as much as my grandparents and extended family are. My mom also plays the role of mom and dad in our home compared to her having both parents in the home, until my grandmother passed away when she was 10. My siblings and I grew up with my mom mostly, and some years with my stepfather while they were married. My grandparents were never married, but my grandmother got married to her first husband at the age of 13. My mother was married and then got divorced. Another big difference is education. My grandparents did not finish school; my grandpa went up to fifth grade. My mom finished high school and got her cosmetology license, I finished high school and will graduate college in about 2 years, and my brother is in his first year of college right now. Gender roles have stayed consistent for the most part. My mom did most of the “female” roles at home like cooking, caring for the kids, and working. My stepfather would work and take us out places. My grandfather did not really take over my grandmother’s roles when she died. Her roles were taken over by his sisters since they all lived in the same household.
