The original passage from a textbook
“Students frequently overuse direct quotations when taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes” (Lester, James D. Writing Research Papers. 2nd ed. (1976): 46-47.)
Pretend this is what a student wrote in their essay:
Students often use too many direct quotations when they take notes, resulting in too many of them in the final research paper. In fact, probably only about 10% of the final copy should consist of directly quoted material. So it is important to limit the amount of source material copied while taking notes. (Lester, James D. Writing Research Papers. 2nd ed. (1976): 46-47.)
Answer at least ONE of the following questions:
1. What are some specific things wrong with the student “paraphrase”–i.e. why would I, if I saw this in a student paper say it was a form of “unintentional plagiarism” (which could have the same penalty as intentional plagiarism since no one can know for sure what another’s intentions are)?
2. What is wrong with the in-text citation? What should the in-text citation look like?
3. Write your own paraphrase of the passage and cite it.
