In rural Maya communities, status as an indigenous individual possessed both legal and political significance, and increasing liberalisms in local institutions sought to dissolve this status (Caplan, 2010, 32). Thus, the Maya made modifications to liberalism that included a sense of continuity for this status. For instance, in Yucatán and Oaxaca, the local political systems integrated both the ideas of Hispanic liberalism as well as those of colonial institutions in order to maintain stability and legitimacy of local institutions (Caplan, 2010 ,35). One example of local liberalisms was striking a balance between new liberal reforms in politics, church-state relations, and land regulation in Yucatán and the traditional relationship between the indigenous population and the state in areas such as land ownership (Caplan, 2010, 128). In short, Maya drew on liberal practices by taking the idea of individual rights and applying them to maintain both their status and autonomy in relation to local administrations and the state.
