General education learning outcome (gelo) annotated bibliography

An exercise designed to have students begin working on the GELO assignment by submitting an annotated version of the GELO bibliography for comments. According to the The Purdue OWL website “A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals . . . periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called “references” or “works cited” depending on the style format you are using. [You should use the Chicago or Turabian styled format for your project.] A bibliography usually only includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).” An annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Your annotations should summarize each of your scholarly sources. They should be relevant to your topic.

Topic-
Explain similarities and differences between the United States and one of the following countries:
a. Britain
b. Germany
c. Russia
d. Egypt
e. Ghana
f. China
g. Iraq
h. Mexico

For your annotated bibliography, answer the following questions -“Who is the author? What are the author’s credentials? Is the source credible? Is it scholarly? What characteristics make the source credible/scholarly? What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? How will you use it in your paper?” The length of your annotations should be one paragraph for each of your sources for a total of at least three sources. A paragraph should be 5-8 sentences long. Your paragraph should paraphrase or summarize your sources in your own words. (Do not copy and paste phrases, sentences, or whole paragraphs from sources or other papers.)

(Please note that more sources do not necessarily equate to more points. Be sure to submit well-written, relevant, quality, scholarly, correctly-formatted sources.) Plagiarized bibliographies will receive a grade of zero (F).

Submit your bibliography for the GELO assignment here as a Word, Rich Text, or PDF file.

• Be sure to use at least three credible, scholarly references. (Please note that submitting more sources does not automatically guarantee a higher grade. All annotations and entries must be of high quality and must follow the appropriate format.)

• One of the references must be a scholarly journal article. (See Scholarly v. Popular video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud0U-NWuIj8).

• No more than one of the references should be an encyclopedia entry. (This means you must consult a thorough encyclopedia, which provides long articles written by field experts.)

•  Do not include citations for sources without authors.

• Do not use web sites like Wikipedia, Hubpages, Ask.com, and History.com. They are quick and easy, but they are not credible and scholarly.

• Cite your sources using Turabian or Chicago styled notation.

• Make sure you consult a style guide or website for help with citing your sources.

Each entry should be written in your own words. The key to understanding what topic you will do the bibliography on lies in reading the instructions for the GELO assignment.
